Excellent book. I am a 89 year old veteran from WW II . I served in Gen. Patton's Third U.S. Army, XII corps Artillery, 273 rd F.A. Bn.. Our guns were 155 mm. (Long Toms). I remember very well, Gen. Patton' s order to close station , and prepare to move North. Before the order to move , we were in the Saar Basin. We had received information that Hitler was planning the last big fight. The Headquarters Battery commander, Captain Lemke, handed to me a Browning Automatic Rifle. He told me that if the German Army attempted to cross the Saar River, not to surrender or retreat. That night, we received orders to go North. We went into battle north of Luxembourg City. I received all 5 campaign battle stars from Normandy, through the war in Germany. I joined the Army when I was 17, and was activated in the Army after my 18th birthday, September 1943.
There have been two new books on the defense of Bastogne released in the last two weeks: The first was "Those Who Hold Bastogne" and the latter is this reviewed book, "No Greater Valor". I thought both books were good but I liked "Valor" better. It was more deliberate in its telling of the siege of Bastogne though its also a summary, providing just the highlights. Mr Corsi also stops his coverage of Bastogne on 12/26 when the leading elements of Abrams' task force enters the town. He misses entirely the heavy fighting for Bastogne and its surrounding countryside in the following week or so later by far greater forces. The trek of the 4th AD as it fights its way north toward Bastogne is also anemic. The book is also heavily US centric, having considerably less German material than the American side.To add some punch to his story the author seamlessly adds quotes from heavy weights like Hugh Cole, Charles MacDonald, S. L. A. Marshall and others. It's a nice touch that really adds emphasis to key points of the story. The author also develops key mini profiles on the following officers: Middleton, McAuliffe, Roberts and Patton. The author also does a good job of selecting the key highlights to be covered in his story as well as the personal accounts that adds to the human drama of war. While I overall liked this book, there were couple points that can be argued against it. A few times the book is melodramatic and slightly overblown. Also the author deems it necessary to frequently stress that God was overlooking and protecting the Americans at Bastogne against the evil enemy. On tactical matters the author also stresses the Americans were greatly outnumbered and that's just not true. Yes, the Germans had a few more men but not nearly enough by attacking standards to overwhelm the defenses. Most of 2nd PzD and a majority of PLD were sent west leaving the 26th VGD and a few attachments to handle the attack. The author also stated that the Germans were dramatically slowed to the west by not controlling Bastogne and that too is incorrect. The panzer divisions easily bypassed Bastogne on their way to the Meuse River. Hitler and F.M. Model just didn't allow the necessary forces to attack Bastogne in the early days, believing it more important that the panzer divisions should reach the Meuse quickly.A few good maps and a photo gallery are also included as is a Bibliography, Notes Section and Index.Admittedly I prefer a more complete tactical and strategic rendition; books written by Cole, MacDonald, Parker, Winton are examples but if you're interested in an overview this book should be placed on your short list for it's a worthy endeavor.
So many good books out there on WWII, factual histories and firsthand memoirs, without veiled persuasive agenda. But this one appears to have an agenda to reframe the motivations of the greatest generation according to a contemporary world view. My rating does not reflect how accurate or inaccurate this book is concerning this battle, I couldn't read past the introduction where it implies it is presenting a case about the motivations of the soldiers that fought. That is something I will only accept from the men who were there, and so many have written about their motivations, I would strongly suggest seeking those books out.
I have read many books on the Battle of the Bulges/Ardennes campaign, from both sides' perspective. This is by far not the best, but it is good, and it is unique. That makes it valuable. Most of the better accounts I have read detail Patton's prayer and his and McAuliffe's faith - they are so integral, it's difficult to do the story justice without them - but this is the first I have read to blatantly make the case for Divine intervention. Certainly it's difficult to make a case for luck being a deciding factor. Moral as a deciding factor is a given, but it's also a given that American paratroopers always had high morale, and its worth remembering that the Germans were also highly certain that G-d was with them. In evaluating the book though, understand that the author's focus is almost entirely on the defense of Bastogne and its relief. This is because of the author's theme rather than any lack of knowledge or understanding.I do wish the book had gone into more detail on the utter uselessness of Montgomery, who demanded and was granted control of one whole flank's worth of American troops, then declared that it would take him three months to be ready to attack whilst characteristically ceding hard-won land to "tidy up" his lines, and then after playing virtually no useful part announced that his brilliance had saved the Americans. But as he played no significant role in the battle for Bastogne, it's probably just as well that he isn't significantly included. One unit which does get shortchanged is the all black 969th Artillery Battalion; this crack unit composed the bulk of McAuliffe's very effective heavy artillery, retreated under heavy fire in good order, took over command of the disparate artillery groups once in Bastogne, and formed the core of the defense. No 969th, no successful defense of Bastogne until Patton could relieve the town.If you are searching for your first book for an overview on this campaign, this is a decent book, but its limited scope wouldn't make me recommend it. If you are looking for a book specifically on Bastogne, this isn't a bad choice, though it focuses a bit too much on the Divine than on the men for my taste. If you are a militant atheist seeking to discredit the author, you're wasting your time, as his claims are too modest and/or too inherently unprovable to find evidence either way. If you are searching for the definitive history on this campaign from the American side, this isn't it. Most of the units involved get very cursory coverage as the author focuses almost entirely on the 101st Airborne, the 4th Armored, and the 10th Armored. The 28th gets a bit of well-earned attention, and the 106th's struggle gets almost no coverage. (Though what is there is respectful enough given the division's green status and brief but courageous fight. Some authors are entirely negative on the 106th, which I don't think is deserved. But to my mind, any book detailing the destruction of the 106th should also detail the pivotal role played by Clarke and the remnants of the 106th in the brilliant defense of St. Vith.) The author's focus is almost entirely on the defense and relief of Bastogne, which are certainly pivotal to the American victory but hardly decisive alone. Personally I would jump straight to Hugh Cole for an accurate, compelling and incredibly thorough account of the entire campaign. But I did very much enjoy this book as well. If one understands the intentionally limited scope and isn't offended by the religious theme, it's an excellent book.
