Planetes Omnibus Volume 1, by Makoto Yukimura

Review

"When people recommend a good “gateway” manga for American comic readers, one choice that comes up often is Makoto Yukimura’s Planetes. Originally serialized in Japanese magazine Weekly Morning from 1999 to 2004, Planetes is a “hard sci-fi” drama set in the year 2075 that follows a crew on a debris-collection ship in outer space. It is highly recommended by manga enthusiasts, in part, because of its realistic tone, rich backstories, and complex themes involving environmentalism, terrorism, and existentialism. Another reason is Yukimura's artwork, which mixes cartoony characters with detailed backgrounds and machinery to ground it all in a sense of realism without losing the energy often associated with good manga. Dark Horse has brought a lot of quality manga to North American readers in the past couple of years, and with Planetes they’ve assembled the entire story into one giant 500+ page omnibus with restored color sequences." -Mental Floss

This omnibus edition contains the first half of the complete Planetes story. Having only been familiar with the anime version I was pleasantly surprised to find that I like this even better, the artwork is sharper and there is plenty of time to admire the details. On the surface, Planetes seems primarily concerned with space debris removal in Earth’s atmosphere but as you progress further into the story it becomes clear that the characters and their humanity are really what this story is about, which is good. The illustrations are excellent, with great attention to realistic space design engineering and an appropriately vast scale of space, but it’s the main characters that kept me turning the pages. My favorite has to be Hachi’s dad who shows up about halfway through and unleashes much chaos with his crazy lifestyle. By the time Tanabe arrived on the scene as a green recruit I was hooked, you might as well order Volume 2 before you finish this one. Come for the artwork, stay for the rounded characters and deep philosophical underpinnings, this one’s a keeper.

Not quite what I expected, that's the best way to describe this book. This omnibus collects a series of stories focused around a crew of astronauts tasked with removing space debris around Earth. The main character, Hachimaki, belongs to this crew of garbage hunters but has his eye set on the conquest of space and eventually starts training for the first manned mission to Jupiter. While I did enjoy to varying degrees the different stories leading up to that point I have to admit I found the latter stories to be the more engaging, even if Hachi isn't such a great lead to follow around. At the very least this volume offers a different perspective on the difficulties involved in conquering the final frontier and exploring how the day-to-day life of future astronauts will be like. Here's looking forward to Volume 2.

This is one of the most boring manga I've ever read! Weird looking characters. Not digging the art style. Story feels empty. Nothing really happens just dull conversations between the lifeless characters. The whole thing feels like a filler not a real story with a real plot! It doesn't feel like a manga. Feels more like a western comic. I just didn't find a single thing about it that I liked. Pointless and dull as hell!

It is beautiful to look at and beautiful to read. To call it a slice of life space Odyssey would cheapen the depth of this manga's scope. There's nothing else quite like it. If you love character development, philosophy, politics, raw emotion and stunning action, this manga has it all. I cannot reccomend it to you enough.

SO. GOOD. One of my fave anime, decided to read the comic and it's even better! A must read for any comic fan.

Planetes one of the nicest volumes of manga I've ever owned dark horse has really stepped up their game with this release its larger than your average manga volume and includes all the color pages from the original Japanese releases if this is the quality of manga omnibuses dark horse is going to start releasing I'll make sure to buy them all and this really has me excited for the I am a hero omnibuses soon to be released.

Great series. Characters that really grow on you with depth almost unparalleled in most books, especially for manga like this. Highly recommended. So different than the usual space sci-fi books I'm used to.

There are space stations, cities on the moon and a huge demand for more resources. And whereever man goes he takes his trash with him. Disused satellites, fuel tanks and other space junk makes it dangerous just moving about in orbit. The young Hachimaki works as a orbital garbage man but he has bigger plans in mind. He wants his own spaceship. The manga is realistic, using real science, but never shoving it into our face - the characters and their stories are always the most important point. Great hard science fiction set in a near future that seems just around the corner.
