Great stories about those mushers who didn't get to the finish line in Nome during the 2010 Iditarod. Things that you never read about on the Iditarod's website or hear about in the news.My one complaint is that the book started with a story about Lance Mackey, who actually WON the race that year. He was included because of his battle with cancer and how he overcame it. Now, I think Lance Mackey is an incredible musher, but I don't think that his story really fits with the "Dashed Hopes and Shattered Aspirations" part of the title of the book.Otherwise, if you're interested in the Iditarod, this is a great read and includes stories about real people. I've purchased 4 copies of this book...one for myself, one for our school library and two for our 4th grade teachers who do a big Iditarod unit with their students.

In his introduction to "Graveyard of Dreams," award-winning journalist Craig Medred notes this interesting fact:"In the 37-year history of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, fewer than a thousand people have made it from the starting line in Anchorage to the finish line in Nome. More people than that had reached the top of Mount Everest, the world's tallest and deadliest mountain, by the end of the 20th century. By 2005, more than twice as many people had reached the summit of Everest as had managed to reach Nome by dog team in the Iditarod."Musher Cindy Abbott, who once successfully scaled Everest's summit, and whose travails in this year's Iditarod echo with a vengeance those found in this book, confirms that the annual thousand-mile dog sled race is far more difficult than climbing the famed mountain. Yet stories like Abbott's get little attention in the press, which instead prefers to focus on the winners and "front-of-the-packers."Medred seeks to remedy this by telling the stories of a group of "back-of-the-packers" he followed during the 2010 race. Be forewarned: these are not stories of triumph in the face of adversity, nor do they paint a romantic picture of what is often billed as the Last Great Race on Earth. Most of the mushers described here, rookies and veterans alike, will end up scratching before reaching Nome, due to injury, destroyed equipment, or faltering dog teams. The book is organized according to the different runs, or stretches, of the historic Iditarod Trail where each of the mushers meets his or her untimely end. Medred uses his extensive knowledge of the trail to describe the special challenges faced on each stretch, then goes on to talk about what brought each musher to the Iditarod in the first place. What ties them together is that all came north and caught the bug, then sunk their lives and livelihood into the race. Medred explains what, exactly, undid them, how their dreams collided with the harsh reality of the Alaskan wilderness.Interestingly enough, Medred begins with a chapter on Lance Mackey. Not only did Mackey win the 2010 Iditarod; it was his fourth consecutive win, a feat not equaled in Iditarod history. But before Mackey became an almost superhuman mushing champion, he was viewed as something of a joke on the Iditarod Trail. Son of 1978 Iditarod winner Dick Mackey, Lance led a life of drug addiction, divorce, and run-ins with the law. The Iditarod was all he had, although he was not seen by most as a serious contender. His early tries routinely placed him in the back-of-the-pack. Then a cancer diagnosis turned his life around. He got treatment, beat the cancer, and went on to train for and win the 2007 - 2010 races.Yet Mackey's story, while inspiring, is deceptive. It may sound like the tale of an "everyman" overcoming the obstacles of the Iditarod Trail and prevailing. But Mackey was born into a racing dynasty, and his otherworldly will arose from an early life of failure running headlong into an unexpected death sentence. There's nothing "everyman" about him.As Medred writes, the Iditarod "is an addictive fantasy about a partnership with man's best friend wrapped in the mythology of the north." However, there's another side to that north, a side that's indifferent, and often hostile, to the dreams of everyday men and women.

I was on the Iditarod trail in 2010 and, unfortunately, am one of the people profiled in the book as I did not finish the race in my one and only chance to do so (it is very expensive). However, it's a really good read and I've given about 20 copies as gifts and everybody has found it to be a riveting read.
