The living word of God written in the heart of Father Arseny shows us Christ within this humble Orthodox priest. I cannot read more than three pages or so without weeping, both in joy and in profound sorrow that I fall far short of such a Christian. This is not only a book, but a treasure of how to live the Orthodox Christian Faith which has so much to tell us about the Gospel of Christ and how to cooperate with His Holy Spirit in our hearts and consciences. Note: a friend visited a Russian home, and the grandma warned him of thieves in the neighborhood. She made the sign of the Cross over him with prayer. That evening he was indeed accosted by someone who stood, ready to attack, and then ran away into the darkness ..he knows that the Lord protected him - again by the simple faith of Christ's people. Please do not keep this book to yourself, but pass it along to as many as have the heart to receive it. It is a powerful, life-changing testimony.
Rarely do I find a book that is compelling from start to finish. A book that through which the Holy Spirit reaches into my very depths calling me to lay down my self-centeredness, my pride and my love of the world, to reach to something and someone so much greater. The stories of how Fr. Arseny took incredible abuse and won over the tormentors with the great love of Christ flowing through his life. A non-stop book of God's loves and miracles fully active in todays world, even at the worlds worst. Rare will be the person who can read this without having a sense of a deep inner goodness wanting to come to the surface and reach out to others. This is truly a call to all of us to allow God to bring us to His best and highest in our lives.
I have read both books now about Father Arseny. I loved both, but this is my favorite of the two. It is easier to read, being written and edited better that Cloud of Witnesses. This books gives more personal stories of Father Arseny while he was imprisoned in the Gulag system. Though the book nowhere uses this description, Father Arseny was a true saint and as always with saints, esp. modern ones, gives us something to really check our lives by if we are truly trying to lead a Christian life and seeking oneness with God. Imagine the heights of spiritual love to be able to turn around after your release from the Gulag and bless this place from hell, instead of cursing it an never looking back, which , let's face it, most of us would be inclined to do. This is but one story of many, many other amazing and inspiring accounts from the life of Father Arseny. I am thankful to those who shared their stories and the author who compiled and translated this wonderful book.
I first encountered the book in the audio format. It was excellent! The only drawback, as I experienced it, was the accent of Vera Bouteneff (who reads half the chapters). Her Russian accent sometimes made it a just a bit difficult to understand a word or two, but never sacrificing my overall understanding of so much as a paragraph. A year after first listening to the audio book, I was given a copy of the paperback, and lo and behold: the print book is about 50% longer than the audio version! And the audio book packaging says nothing about being a shortened version. Overall, both versions are excellent. Just be warned -- unless the audio book is being released in a new version -- the audio book is missing about the last third of the book. It is *not* unabridged as advertised.
There is no better recommendation that can be given for a book than to say that it draws one closer to God. I just finished reading the last page. Oh! Oh! Oh! I am overwhelmed. A man that could not repay evil for evil, that could befriend the one who signed the papers consigning him to the Gulag, a man of both humility and holiness, one who blessed others by his life, is one whose story is well worth reading. It shows me some of wide gap between my own spiritual life and that of this man, the genuineness of whose faith was forged in the very worst of circumstances.Incidentally, I am not an Orthodox Christian. I am an Evangelical who fellowships with a Reformed church. I am firmly a Reformation Protestant. True, some of the references in the book to the Mother of God are a bit outside my frame of reference. But Father Arseny lived out his faith, lived a life of love, treating with kindness and care even those who were unkind and despicable to him. Believers of all stripes can benefit from the humble, gentle, kindly example that shines brightly through these pages. This is one of the most powerful books I have ever read, and one I hope to reread many, many times!
A blessing and very inspiring story of a priest that lived the life of Christ in a prison camp. His humility and great love that he showed to all touched the lives of so many there and so many that have read this story of His walk with God!!

There are no words to describe my experience with this book. It was a fascinating read, and very very entertaining. It helped me in starting to read new books. Can't wait to read "Cloud of Witnesses" which is the next sequel to this book.
