Review

"THIS VOLUME IS A REAL TREASURE. Hundreds of contemporary artworks by artists of African descent are illustrated. Peggy Cooper Cafritz (1947-2018), the passionate and inveterate collector, purchased the works over two periods of time. (She lost her first art collection to a house fire in 2009, and soon began assembling another.) The book showcases her art collections and documents her life. She pens an engrossing biographical essay that spans growing up in Mobile, Ala., to her ascension as an influential Washington, D.C., lawyer, arts patron/advocate, and founder the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. In addition, her relationships with key figures are revealed and explored through contributions from artists, gallery owner Jack Shainman, and Studio Museum in Harlem Director Thelma Golden, who conducts an interview with Cafritz for the book. Emerging artists are overwhelmingly represented in Cafritz’s more recent collection, artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Nina Chanel Abney, Derek Fordjour, Tschabalala Self, Titus Kaphar, and Simone Leigh, who she supported early and are coming into their own today. Cafritz, who died at age 70, two days before the official publication of this book, bequeathed the majority of her vast collection to the Studio Museum (400+ works) and Duke Ellington (250+ works). The gesture will benefit generations to come, as will this volume, which Cafritz titled with her mantra: “Fired Up! Ready to Go!” She’s left an insightful gift of great value to both new collectors and art world insiders, as well as those interested in transformational cultural leaders." —Culture Type

What a wonderful book and testimony about Peggy Cooper Cafritz life and contemporary art collection, I would highly recommend this book for novice and seasoned collectors. There are many contributors, such as Thelma Golden(Director of the Studio Museum in Harlem), Kerry James Marshall (artist), Hank Willis Thomas(artist) and Jack Shaiman (New York art dealer) just to name a few, This book is filled with illustration after illustration of Ms, Cafritz art collection before and after the 2009 fire. I know she would be proud of this book, just like I am.

Stunning photographs of Peggy Cooper Cafritz' lost art treasures. Her recent passing makes her written memories even more poignant.I love this book.

This is the beautiful story of the life of dedication to achieving opportunity for and encouraging the creativity of young people lived by Peggy Cooper Cafritz. The prints of her artwork, including many destroyed in a house fire, document her taste and preserve for posterity those lost pieces. Peggy's life was one of principle, intelligence and truth. Her death just before the release of this work was a shock and leaves a void in the lives of the many who knew and admired her.

I read about this book in the obituary of the collector of the extraorindary Peggy Cooper Cafritz. The African American artists represented in this gorgeous book will blow your mind. This is a must have for any art lover in your life.

Could not wait to receive this book and highly recommend it. It is all that I expected and then some. Very well illustrated.

She had an incredibly keen eye for art from emerging Diaspora artists. Those who wrote for this book did a highly effective job at putting the reader into her life as a collector and strong contributor in many ways.

Spellbinding.

"Fired Up" provides a memorable example of contemporary African-American art, in various mediums and styles. Ms. Cooper Cafritz's curatorial eye was discerning in recognizing great work, and her large collection (much of which was lost in a terrible house fire) shows that flare. This book should be on every coffee table in America as the first and most extensive salute to current African-American artistry, especially great works that serve to protest racism, hatred and the sorry state of race relations in America. The works presented give hope, encouragement and the beginnings of a great new history to all young artists. It is a true treasure for all Americans, and a kick-start to a new era of vibrant African-American artistic creativity.
