If only Manga Guides were available when we were struggling to make sense of subjects related to math and chemistry in high school. This manga guide on Physiology, one part of a series of nine guides, is presented in an absolutely brilliant format to not only make it understandable but also to make learning about the intricate and amazing processes of the human body more fun! Kudos to Etsuro Tanaka and Keiko Koyama for the clever and engaging cartoon storyline and text that explains the mystery of human physiology.

I've read several of these and recommended them to my students who don't really do as well with the traditional textbooks as a form of learning. The problem is, they tend to be too simplistic in some areas and too advanced in others for the classes I teach, but, if it draws any of them in and gets them interested to learn more, it will have done the job.

I love it! I am so amazed how the pictures explain each topic.

The best

I am unable to download it to my kindle device as it returned an error message saying that 'The item is not compatible with this device' :(Can anyone help me out??

I asked lightheartedly on Twitter "Is there something wrong in getting medical advice from a Manga comic book?" because I have found the information in The Manga Guide to Physiology to be more complete and understandable than many medical websites. Of course the book should not replace a medical professional but it does give a very comprehensive look at the workings of the human body. And, of course, the format of the book (Manga comic book with an interesting story line and great illustrations) makes it more readable than a textbook. I found myself saying "Just one more chapter" which would never have been the case in a typical physiology text book.Like the other Manga guides the information is presented using young characters involved in something to keep your interest. In The Manga Guide to Physiology a Nursing School freshman named Kumiko needs to pass a test on the human body in order to compete in the campus marathon which she is simultaneously training for. She is tutored by a young professor who turns out to be someone unexpected.Don't be fooled and think that because of this background story the information is fluff. The information presented is detailed but presented in a clear manner with examples that will make you understand the subject rather than help you memorize facts. In addition there is always an "Even More About…" section that gets into more details for those who want it.The sections give a complete look at how the body works:The Circulatory SystemThe Respiratory SystemThe Digestive SystemThe Kidneys and Renal SystemBody FluidsThe Brain and Nervous SystemThe Sensory Nervous SystemThe Musculoskeletal SystemCells, Genes and ReproductionThe Endocrine SystemThe No Starch Press Manga series and in particular this book, The Manga Guide to Physiology, have become a valuable platform to learn some complicated subjects in an engaging way.

Physiology, the study of normal functions and processes in the human body, is a standard class for everyone who studies in a medically related field, and is frequently part of a biology major as well. It can be taken as part of a biology honors program in some high schools, often combined with anatomy. While physiology is not particularly difficult to learn and understand, a lot of memorization is required, and for most students the acquisition of the required vocabulary can be challenging. The Manga Guide to Physiology can be a useful adjunct to someone taking a physiology class, or may be a valued introduction to the concepts of physiology fro someone considering the class. We learn in different ways, the Manga approach uses a visual (think graphical novel) and written didactic approach, and combines them in story form to hold our interest. The didactic portion of each chapter is brief (~ 10 pages) but well written, and does a good job of answering some of the questions that might arise when reading the comics. Some of the chapters are merely introductory to the subject, and lack much detail. e.g. Cells, Genes, and Reproduction. But the important vocabulary is introduced, a stepping-stone to more advanced knowledge. Many will find it easier to digest than a standard text of physiology. And the graphical presentation will likely hold their interest better than the usual textbook. The chapters each focus on an organ system, and include:Circulatory SystemRespiratory SystemDigestive SystemKidneysBody Fluids (blood, ions in the blood stream, etc.)Brain and Nervous systemSensory Nervous SystemMusculoskeletal SystemCells, Genes, and ReproductionEndocrine System (glands, thyroid, adrenal, etc.)A nine page index is included.I don't think the book would necessarily be useful as a textbook for a physiology class, but as an introduction to the subject or adjunct resource it could be valuable for many students. And it does inject some humor into the subject, always a positive!
