Set in Ceylon in the 1930s, the pace of this mystery is leisurely. There is little gore; the only forensics of the day are fingerprints. Because of this, it is reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel, for the solution to the murder lies in thought, in character judgments, and in fortuitous discovery. If you prefer thrillers and fast-paced novels, this will not be the book for you. It is well-written and edited, and the characters each have interesting facets. Having read two of the novels now, out of order, I was pleased to find that Mrs. de Silva plays a more active role in the solution to this mystery--although her behavior remains true to the women of that era. All an all, a very enjoyable novel.
The Nuala series, featuring Inspector de Silva, with wife Jane de Silva serving as a more-clever-than-Watson helper and sounding board, is a charming series of stories. In terms of the dialogue and the appeal of the leading characters, I recommend them fully as enjoyable, light reading. The reason I’m rating them only three stars is that the first three volumes (all that I’ve read) have an identical style of ending, and it becomes tedious: firstly, the criminals help wrap things up neatly by confessing all; not, however, before coming within a hair’s breadth of terminating the hero. Unfortunately for them, the bad guy’s shots always barely miss or hit some not-mortal body part , or when they’re shooting point blank their gun happens to jam, or when they’re stabbing, they make a bloody but non fatal cut, or when they knock the inspector off a height, he happens fall on a mattress… maybe for this to happen on one occasion would be credible, but to happen in every final confrontation with the villain feels contrived and, as said, becomes tedious.
Love the characters, their relationships create a structure for this engaging mystery. I especially enjoyed the nuances of perspective, and the way British colonialism is handled. However l’m not a big fan of the locked room genre of mystery, and in this case it seemed to be so central to the story that there didn’t seem as much space for the exploration of the time period, or the unique nature of Inspector de Silva and the others. Still a fun and reliable read, I would read anything else by the author with happy anticipation.
Even though inspector da Silva was more British than the British in the way he kept his cool in the face of slights and insults by his British colleagues, the mystery ultimately solved itself. Before he had time (or perhaps interest) in investigating the guilty parties, one of them confessed. It makes one wonder if da Silva understands the criminal mind sufficiently to actually solve a crime. Nevermind. The story is charming with engaging characterisations and interesting players. I'll read every book in this series because each of them evokes memories of another time.
Although each book stands alone, each I s a jewel with facets of mystery, humour, and information.Written in clear,descriptive detail. Each character is finely drawn and each one of the individuals arean integral part of the story line. I read all of the books and enjoyed each. I could smell the flowers and feel the humidity.I do wish there was a mystery during the courtship of the two main characters. OH!These books made me crave chai, nan and the spicy red Chutney; yum.
How delightful the three books in this series are. They are informative about Ceylon in the 1930s as well as England in the same period. Plus, and this is a big plus, the characters are painted with a detailed brush. We "know" these people and we like the majority of them. There are red herrings in the mysteries and I had great fun trying to second guess what was going on and who the antagonist(s) would turn out to be.
Once again we find the setting of 1936 and Inspector Silva with a murder. A professional theatre company has come to Nuala and the manager Alexander found dead in his dressing room. Before too much investigating is done, one confesses. These are enjoyable with the touch of the British.
If you like a good plot, mysterious characters and atmospheric backgrounds, you will enjoy the "read". I would like to go back to "Ceylon", the place she envisions---but that would be in another place and time. It is too late for me to go to Hawaii, also----85 years ago.
