This book was recommended to me by my sister, whom I trust implicitly in regards to fantasy fiction. In the spirit of transparency, this is definitely a young adult novel. However, I happen to be a woman in her 30's , and can say with minimal shame that I truly enjoyed this book. My gauge is the number of hours of sleep lost while reading a book, and I can say that this book clocked in at a good 2-3 hours past bedtime for the week I was reading it. Was is moderately predictable and slightly fluffy? Yes. Did I care one bit? No. Enthusiastic yes all around. BRAVO.
Intriguing subject and story. Would like to see more character depth, but I'm sure that will come in subsequent books. It already feels like the action is building to something big. I'll read the next one when it drops.
This is a young adult book about a girl that does not adhere to today's norms. She is psychic and is given a free ride at a private school for psychics. She has lots of adventures during the first year at the school. It is the first book in a series and is quite good.
While the first few chapters don’t grab you... it is well worth the overall read... can’t wait for the next book.
Great, light book. Entertaining. Think supernatural Janet evanovitch
I couldn't put this book down. Most fun read in quite awhile. Can't wait for book two! Hopefully it will be out soon.
The story opens as a young woman, Teddy, nervously enters into a casino. We learn that Teddy has been banned and so is in disguise. Her plan is to win enough to pay off a Russian mobster and return the money she has stolen from her parents retirement fund. Just when she has reached her goal everything goes wrong leaving Teddy broke, and fleeing from the casino security. Suddenly a stranger appears who seems to know her, and offers to help her, a task he amazingly manages. He then makes Teddy an offer she cannot refuse, a chance to rebuild her life, resume her education, and leave her problems behind. He claims that Teddy is not a screwed up loser but is actually a psychic, that her success with poker is not an ability to read her opponents' tells but to read their minds. Teddy decides that she has nothing to lose and so heads off to the school where she finds that nothing is what it seems. This is the first book in a projected series, and so I was expecting a great deal of world building and background information into main characters. Surprisingly there really wasn't which was a bit of problem, characters were introduced, performed their required actions but other there was not enough information supplied to let them be much beyond cardboard figures. The motivations behind the various characters actions is murky at best and there are numerous, very large plot holes. One very annoying inconsistency is that in a school filled with psychics there is very little mind reading going on, even by those supposedly qualified to teach the subject. Another is that Teddy is filled with remorse for disappointing and stealing from her parents but once she sneaks away to attend the school she rarely thinks of them, gives no thought to repaying them or even considers that the mobsters out to hurt her might go after them. The premise for this novel, and series, is excellent. The characters have potential and some of the plot threads that are begun have promise but this reads more like a rough draft. The plot holes I mentioned (and others) need to be closed, the number of convenient coincidences cut down and the characters need to be filled out more so than can come to life. I will probably read the next in the series to see if these issues are addressed but if they don't I'm unlikely to continue beyond that.
Psychological thrillers and literary fiction are usually the corners of the bookstores I live in. So when I saw the cover of School for Psychics by K.C. Archer, I assumed it fell into the same category. When I started reading it, though, I immediately realized that I was wrong. But that didn't stop me from finishing this book in record time. While I moved away from the genres I normally love to read, School for Psychics was a fun, action-packed page-turner that has me counting down the days until the next series installment. School for Psychics follows Teddy Cannon's transition from card shark being hunted down by gangs to recruit for a top-secret school for psychics. Part privately funded, part government controlled, the School for Psychics works to train assets that will be placed in various military and government positions. Of course, that's just what's happening on the surface. The longer Teddy stays at the school, the more secrets--about her past and about the school--begin to surface. But her biggest challenge isn't figuring out these secrets or acing her exams, or controlling her psychic abilities, but figuring out how to be part of a team and learning how to trust her fellow classmates. If she doesn't, it can cost her--and her classmates--her life. What I loved about reading this book is what I loved about watching ABC's Quantico: it was a light read, entertaining, and threw adults into a school-like setting that pushed them to their emotional and physical limits. In Teddy, we have a (somewhat cliched) heroine who is used to working alone and taking care of herself. The cast of characters is both unsurprising and eclectic: the bad boy, the eccentric hippie, the computer genius, the type-A control freak. The fact that the way they interacted could be guessed made this an extremely enjoyable, light read that didn't keep me up all night because I was terrified, but because I was so ensconced in the story. The School for Psychics is an entertaining read, especially for fans of cross-over Contemporary Young Adult, New Adult, and Paranormal Romance.Â
