Review
“This is a phenomenal addition to the herbal bookshelf. It fills the need for a large, comprehensive herbal formulary—the likes of which we have not seen for a hundred years—yet it is so much more than that: a complete guide to the serious use of herbs from the field and forest to the single remedy or formula in clinic.”—Matthew Wood, author of The Earthwise Herbal books“This is now the standard medicine-making textbook for schools of herbal medicine. It contains more methods and more forms than anything else in print, all clearly explained and demonstrated, with bonus materials on herbal energetics and materia medica.”—Paul Bergner, director, North American Institute of Medical Herbalism, editor, Medical Herbalism journal “The Modern Herbal Dispensatory relies on the solid foundation that comes from direct interaction with living, breathing botanicals. To this it adds a specificity gleaned from twenty-first century science: clear guidelines rooted in chemistry and physiology provide definitive answers to questions of extraction method, solvent, timing, and formulation. If you’ve ever wondered which extraction method to use for a given plant, or felt reluctant to try advanced techniques like percolation, this clear and concise reference guide will become a trusted companion. A must-have for herbal educators, clinicians, and manufacturers alike!” —Guido Masé, cofounder and codirector, Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism“Thomas Easley and Steven Horne have done it once again. In the Modern Herbal Dispensatory, historic traditions of medicine making have been captured and shared in a way that empowers the modern lay herbalist to capture the benefits of botanical medicine in the most accessible and potent form. Weaving together folk teachings and scientific perspectives, this book bridges the spectrum of herbal medicine to provide an inspiring, detailed, and practical handbook for herbalists at all levels of experience. This guide should be on the bookshelves of every herbal school, home apothecary, and herbal production facility.”—Emily Ruff, executive director, Florida School of Holistic Living

I found this book to be excellent and even better than expected. I have been studying herbalism for a few years now, so am not a beginner, but not a clinical herbalist either. It is perfect both for someone just beginning their herbal journey as the information is written in an approachable and usable fashion, however I also believe the more advanced herbalist would benefit from this text as there are numerous details included along with a chapter on advanced techniques. Additionally there is information on essential oils, flower waters and the like, that tends to be something more familiar to aromatherapists. Yet, these are truly an excellent addition to one's plant healing repertoire, so it was nice to see them seamlessly added in. I was pleasantly surprised at the materia medica at the end. It is extremely thorough and contained many familiar herbs, but also many new ones. There is also dosing information included which I found helpful. My only suggestion, primarily because I am a visual learner, is it would have been nice to to have pictures of each herb, especially because there were quite a few that were new to me, but as the authors point out there are many other books for that, so it wasn't a big problem. This is definitely an excellent addition to your herbal library! Easy to read and understand, but thorough in its information! I am extremely pleased I purchased it! I plan to share this title with others when I teach courses on herbalism as it provides an excellent foundations and builds to advanced skills.
My copy of this book is already showing signs of regular use - sticky tabs protruding here and there, notes in the margins, a few stains. While the book is genuinely beautiful and feels really good in your hands, the wealth is in the details. The first half of the book starts out with the basics and progresses through advanced medicine-making techniques all in understandable terms. Included here are instructions for concentrating your medicine and formulas for a variety of needs. More than just a basic instruction manual, this book encourages medicine makers to match the medicine to the person and the condition creating custom remedies as needed. But that doesn't mean you can't make gobs of your favorites to share with friends. The second half is a comprehensive materia medica. There are gems throughout, starting in the introduction where we are told which part of the yarrow plant to use to soothe tooth pain, to near the end where we're given two preparations of scullcap with differing uses.
First seven chapters explains everything you could possibly need to know on types of extractions and how to do them step by step, preparing plant materials, equipment needed, making basic extracts, potentcies, which solvents are best with what type of herbs, it talks about options of equipment and which are best it explains the types of herbs on another level likeFragrant bitter, acrid, alkaloid bitter, oily, sour, mucilant, decoction exc.really breaking everything down in a very detailed manner. By chapter 8 we’re learning about topical preparations and again very detailed. They really cover everything in this book so you won’t have to go buy another book to figure out how to do something or understand it. It’s all covered. It’s well written! Great for beginners and more advanced learners. I feel like this is the book that takes you from step one to the end. Beginner to advanced. It really does cover it all and show you step by step how to do and make everything. Which I love!!! I’m a visual learner so having the step by pictures in there as well helped a lot!
This was one of a number of books I purchased dealing with the use of herbs for medicinal purposes. I initially spent more times on some of the other books but am finding this to probably be the best of the group. It covers every aspect of what is available for possible medical use and then how to make them into usable concoctions. He makes use of information from all four of the healing traditions. He describes the strengths and possible problems in using each product. It is easy to read, makes sense and you can choose how involved you might want to be in the process.
This book belongs in every herbalist's library. The authors have created a very comprehensive guide to making remedies you can use at home or in your practice. Not only is there encyclopedia of single herbs with succinct energetics, properties and dosages but also easy to understand formulas which, if you study them, will provide you with the knowledge to create your own. The most interesting aspect of the book are the actual techniques they use to create the medicines themselves. Even after years of making my own medicines, I learned so much, not only about simple techniques that I didn't know, but I also learned about the fascinating soxhlet extraction method which I intend to try. My kitchen is beginning to look like the potions room at Hogwarts! This book is definitely in the top 5 best herb books you can own. If you are truly into using herbs for your own and your families health, you need this book. It will soon be dog eared by frequent use.
a lot of books suitable for novices and amateurs casually trot around the nitty gritty of the topic. Often, entire books are made to comfortably introduce a topic and cast it in a favorable light so as to make you buy a higher level book. Not this one, though! Yes, it is suitable for beginners, but it doesn't tarry. It PULLS you into herbalism, making you really start to think like an herbalist!Great information, recipes, references, and more! An all around YES.
One of the better herb books in terms of interactions and constituents ... Chemistry based and all organized by herb.. Just what I wanted ...
HIGHLY recommend for any beginning herbalist. Doesn't go into hundreds and hundreds of plants like some do. Which is good, because it gives more and better info on the many it does cover. The BEST I've seen so far on actually explaining how to make the tinctures, oils, and various extraction methods. Recommended dosages for everything, too.
