I have about 6 Dummies books in my library, mainly on math subjects, practically learned calculus with them, and they were quite a value. I figured this book, being a combination of 8 dedicated to electronics would be all that I needed. But, I was very disappointed. The book repeatedly ends subjects early referring the reader to other sources. For example, the book describes in fine detail what a transistor is, but then states it is only going to cover bi-polar transistors. There are many other types in common use. Likewise with coverage of amplifiers. I stopped reading after I discovered this and found a free interactive website that is more more thorough.I really expected more for the length and cost of this book. So, only 3-stars on this one.

DON’T BUY THIS BOOK, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A NOVICE.Now, before I tell you why, allow me to tell you a bit about myself.I’m a retired physics teacher with 40 years of experience. In that time I’ve used, reviewed and even made some contributions to physics books. I know my stuff when it comes to technical teaching materials.In all those 40 years I have never once ever encountered a book with so many typos and editing mistakes as this one!! They are so common as to make the book unusable for the beginner wanting to learn electronics.There are incorrect symbols for electronic devices. There are lots of good projects however the parts list does not match the schematic and schematics are incorrectly labelled. It goes on and on. They even got the nationality of a famous physicist wrong. The book cannot be trusted to give you correct information. You’re not going to believe this one: in the days of spell checkers there is even a spelling error. There’s even a place where the instructions for one project has been cut and pasted into the wrong project. They even got the units for capacitors (farads) and inductors (henrys) mixed-up.It’s obvious that Doug Lowe did not write portions of this book or even read it before publication.Was it really proofread? Did the people in the Acknowledgments even see this work? Hard for me to understand how so many errors could make it past so many of those people.There’s also the issue of corporate responsibility. I have twice contacted Wiley regarding this book and all I ever got back was a form survey. They’ll take your money but won’t be accountable for all its defects. They just don’t seem to care about their readers.If you bought this book I advise you to contact Wiley at 1-877-762-2974 and vociferously complain. (Please note that the person to whom you speak is only the representative of Wiley, not the one responsible for all the errors. Be firm but polite). Demand your money back or insist that they hire competent proofreaders to fix this book and post the results online. If I were the CEO of Wiley I would dock the paycheck of the people who did not do their paid work. They need to give a copy of “Proofreading for Dummies” to all involved.I have found about 50 errors. I’m sure there are a lot more. I do not plan to post them. Let the people who were paid to publish this book be held accountable and do the job for which they were hired. I do not plan to subsidize their incompetence. Wiley needs to do this job, not the people who paid to buy the book.Final Irony:Allow me to say that the basic text of the book is actually very good, Kudos to Doug Lowe, he’s a talented writer. I wonder how he feels, personally, that such an error-laden disaster was published under his name. If it weren’t for all the errors I would have given this book a 5-star rating.To summarize:DON’T BUY THIS BOOK!! To quote another reviewer “you’ve been warned.”EPILOGUES1) I borrowed a copy the 2nd edition of this book (2017). About half of the errors have been corrected for a grade of 50%. So, both the 1st and 2nd edition get failing grades.2) I recently bought a copy of Make: Electronics, 2nd ed. (2015), Charles Pratt, Media Maker Inc, publisher. It is dedicated to all those readers who helped him improve the 1st edition. There are also many ways to report and find out about errors in the book. What a difference between that and the indifferent incompetents at Wiley.

I really like this book. Yeah, there may be a couple spots that aren't exactly perfect, and I agree that for the cost of this book they could have sprung for colored pictures, but I don't think any of that takes away from the rest of the wonderful aspects of this book. It is split up nicely into 8 "mini-books." The table of contents was done nicely as well. I can definitely see myself coming back to this book simply as a reference. You forget what a symbol was on an electrical drawing? Just review the table of contents to find out which page standard electrical symbols are on, check it out, and keep going with what you were doing.Like most "for Dummies" books, this is presented in a very down to earth, layman's terms format. The analogies the author uses are very helpful when trying to mentally picture certain concepts. Within the first 100 pages your understanding of the generic term "electricity" or "electronics" will grow immeasurably.The author also frequently name drops Radio Shack for components and other materials, which I don't personally have a gripe with considering that having part numbers for folks to be able to write down, bring to their local shop, and purchase for the projects in the book can be very handy for beginners. Not a con in my opinion.Just as a note, and I'm sure this has probably been mentioned by others, if you don't already have ANY tools/components, then it could probably be a little spendy to get the basics needed for the projects contained within this book; consequently, if you're looking to start playing around with electronics, you're going to need to get that stuff anyway. As a note, I picked up the Mastech MS8268 digital multimeter right here at Amazon for about $30. Granted it's not going to be the industrial standard of something like a Fluke, but if you're just starting out, or you don't use multimeter daily for your job, it will fit the bill nicely. It even lights up the terminals you need to use based upon what you're trying to measure.At the end of the day I am just thrilled what I got. Met and exceeded my expectations. I will recommend this book to any of my friends/family looking to get involved in such a fun hobby.UPDATE:I will occasionally keep this review updated with critical error fixes I find throughout the book as I come across them.Error Update 1:The "Coin Toss" Project - Page 111: There are actually 2 errors on this page.The first error is under step # 4 "Install the Resistors," where it lists which resistors to put in which PCB holes. The very first one is for the 1k Ohm resistor to be placed from strip 9 to strip 10. In fact it should be placed from strip 15 to strip 20, which can be confirmed by reviewing the completed image on page 112 or 120.The second error is step # 6. The entire step can be ignored. It appears as though it is an accidental copy from the prototype build step # 2 on page 99.Error Update 2:Page 218: Project 2-1: Using a Current-Limiting Resistor: There is an error in the parts list. The lamp & lamp holder parts can be deleted, for what you actually need is a 5mm 1/4W LED.Error Update 3:Page 265 "Example" Paragraph - Line # 1: Replace "capacitance" with "inductance"Page 265 "Example" Paragraph - Line # 4: Replace "farads" with "henrys"Page 265 "Example" Paragraph - Line # 5: Replace "0.1 F" with 0.1 H"Error Update 4:Page 314: The completed project image shows 2 unused resistors in the bottom-left. These can be deleted/ignored.Page 315, Step # 3: The 330 Ohm resistor is listed as being placed in hole J15, but it should actually be J16.Page 315, Step # 4: The cathode (the shorter of the two leads) should go in hole J11, and the anode (the longer of the two leads) should go in hole J6.Page 315, Step # 7: The entire paragraph about the BASIC stamp board can be ignored.

It had so much potential to be amazing, to send a message, gain some understanding—to really see through the eyes of victim’s of school shootings everywhere.The only emotion I got from this book was irritation. For example:"Chris tosses me my sports drink, and I take a few gulps before discarding it. More shots break the icy air, and we run."It’s that little key right there, “more shots.” They had already heard the gun shots inside the school. They had decided on a plan to find help. But before doing anything, they needed some Gatorade? That irks me so much. People are getting shot—their friends, siblings, teachers—but they needed to power-up really quick before finding help? No. I understand being in shock. This is not shock. This is a waste of time.Claire. There was no reason for us to read from her POV. None, whatsoever. All we got from her is that she’s incredibly selfish. She noticed the welts and bruises all over Tyler, HER BOYFRIEND OF TWO YEARS, and instead of mentioning to someone that he was being abused by his father, she acted like the bruises didn’t even exist. Throughout the whole book, in her POV we go back and forth from flashbacks of her with “kind-of-good Tyler, who was just ohhh so kind” (What?) to “Chris, he’s always there for me, do I like-like him, but wait is my brother okay?” Ugh. Her POV in this book is an inconsideration to the true sadness, anxiety, and complete desperation that people go through when faced with the possibility of having lost a loved one and not being able to do anything about it. She made me sick. By the way, she’s Gatorade girl.All four of the main characters were written the same way. I actually had to go back a couple times to remind myself of who’s POV I was reading from.I understand that Tyler was troubled, that losing his mom and the thought of Autumn moving away were hard for him to handle. I understand that he was abused, mostly in defense of Autumn. But he was also a bully, a rapist, and a murderer.And there’s this little gem:'He stares at me over the barrel, and the corner of his mouth twitches. A smirk. Then a smile—a smile full of delight and mischief. When he pulls the trigger, I feel the shot rather than hear it…The last thing I hear is Ty saying, “I just don’t want to be alone anymore.”'So, let me get this straight. He’s smiling mischievously while confessing that he “doesn’t want to be alone anymore.” Right. Okay.TIWIE was hard to finish, but not for the reason I picked it up in the first place. It had so much potential to be amazing. Instead, I’m angry with myself for reading it.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!I have to say, this might be one of the worst books I have read in a long time. I'm a middle school teacher who loves to read YA novels. This one just did not hit the mark. The characters were flimsy and unlikable, and the plot was absolutely brimming with cliches. The boy and girl who have been best friends all of their lives, and it takes a school shooting to make the girl realize he's loved her all along? The two teenagers who skipped the assembly somehow managing to save the students? The beautiful dancer whose entire life is dance and who only wants to escape her small town and abusive father that hates dance because it 'killed his wife' (Footloose, anyone?). Also take into account the random poetic lines somehow running through the minds of teenagers in the middle of an extremely traumatizing event and it's enough to make anyone gag.Also obvious is the fact that this author has absolutely no concept of how teenagers behave or how their relationships work. The students are in the midst of a showdown with a school shooter and are watching him shoot their classmates and teachers at point-blank range (sometimes, in the face) - we have to assume this is the first time these kids have seen such blatant gore, and possibly even death. Their reactions? To wince slightly, maybe gasp, and then to turn to their friends and try to figure out what to do. Let's be real, here - if this were teenagers experiencing this, we'd be seeing hysterics if not total trauma (and I'm saying that, fully aware that even adults with fully-formed brains would react in much the same way). Looking at the relationships between these characters (besides being one massive cliche), the strangely underdeveloped relationship between the shooter's sister and best friend is awkward at best due to the fact that the only interaction we see is them staring wistfully at each other and remembering sappy moments wherein they ALSO gazed wistfully at each other. The aforementioned cliche of the girl/boy best friends who find love in the midst of the girl's brother dying (while on the phone with her) reaches an all-time low when the girl makes out with the boy and announces she wants to be a teacher. Let me reiterate - her brother literally JUST DIED WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH HER, and she makes out with her best friend and decides her future. Right then and there. It's as cringe worthy as it sounds. But this is somehow also the girl that tells her entire class and her COACH, a grown man, what to do in this instance of crisis - because that sounds realistic, a teenager somehow having the presence of mind to direct everyone into action while her coach stares dumbly at her. Come on.One last thing - the writing is just awful. All of the characters sound exactly the same. I had to constantly go back and see who's POV I was reading. None of them had any kind of distinct voice or actions. Such a shame, because that could have been the one redeeming factor to this absolute disaster of a book.All in all, this book was so bad that I had to force myself to finish it, just so I could write a review and warn people from wasting their time. It is extremely rare that I can't find a single redeeming quality in a book, but this one is the exception. The book does not handle the situation of a school shooter with any bit of grace, does not offer any insight into the mind of a school-shooter or his motivations (nor any worthwhile insight into the other characters of the book), and gives little in the way of character development or even plot development. If you're looking for a mindless read chock full of painful cliches, with absolutely unlikable characters and complete and total suspension of belief in how a human being would interact with their surroundings/another human being, this might be the book for you.

To be honest, I have mixed feelings about this book. I did read it quickly, because I wanted to know what happened. However, parts of the story were gripping and horrific, while others were mediocre and not believable. Most of the characters (like the shooter) were one dimensional and at times it was hard to tell them apart, let alone connect with them. I will say that I did like how the characters were all connected to each other (friends, family, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc.) I also liked the diversity of the characters (Hispanic, Disabled, Gay, etc.) Although I have never experienced a school shooting, things the characters did/said seemed a little ridiculous and unrealistic to me. Overall, This is Where it Ends was not my cup of tea, but a lot of other reviewers found it captivating, so don't let my review discourage you from picking up a copy.

This is probably the most intense book I have ever read. Two days is all it took for me to finish it. I could not put it down. I read through it so quickly because I wanted, no, I needed the terror to end. At some points I wasn't sure I could make it, but the stories of these characters needed to be told and it would have been unfair of me to not allow them to finish their tales. My only problem was the ending. I would have liked a little more on how some of the characters were dealing. A little more closure. With that being said, the story was still great and my only question, if I could ask one of the author, is how emotionally exhausted was she when she wrote the last word. I would also like to say thank you to the author for sharing your gift with us.

I received this book in return for an honest review. It's a wonderful collection of everything holiday. The illustrations beg to be colored and are a compilation of all thing Christmas. I love the variety of images from ornaments and trees, to adorable Holiday characters, animals and snowmen and much, much more. This book will provide hours of coloring pleasure. The book is soft cover with pages measuring 81/2" square. Images are one sided and paper is adequate for markers and pencils.

This is a very cute little book... lots of different christmas themed pictures. Some are easier to color then others, so there is something for everyone in this book, from ornaments, to santas, to christmas themed mandalas.

I received this book for my honest opinion. This is the cutest book so many diffrent pictures to make your own when i got it and looked the first page had me hooked the cute little snowmen i love this christmas book

I received this book in exchange for my honest review. This in no way affected my opinion. That being said, I truly enjoyed the pictures in this book. It's 8 1/2" x 8 1/2", easy to take with you anywhere. Pictures are printed on good quality white paper, and are single-sided which is great if you want to frame your work. You can use pencils and gel pens. I would recommend using a sheet of paper underneath your drawing to prevent bleed thru. There is a good range of difficulty, from easy to very detailed. I highly recommend this book.

I received this book for my honest review... When I opened this coloring book, I was expecting the typical Santa, Christmas trees, ornaments, presents, snowmen drawings...but WOW, was I surprised...There are the typical Christmas pictures, but they are drawn in a beautiful, artistic way, not in the elementary style like some other coloring books...Included is a wonderful variety of pictures, ranging from very cute, "won't take days to color", to more detailed, intricately drawn...Some examples include mandalas, winter scenes, hanging ornaments and Santa Claus reminiscent of St. Nick in an old-village...The pages are on good quality, single sided, white paper...I recommend colored pencils, gel pens and pastels...You can use markers, but place another page behind the one you are coloring (alcohol markers will bleed through)...There are 40 coloring pages, a page to color in the front of the book and a color test page, so it is well worth the money...This is my third Pegasus Coloring Book and I'm definitely going to continue buying more...Happy Coloring

The pictures in this book a very lovely. Very well drawn and absolutely adorable. The one problem for me personally is, this is not a standard 8.5 x 11 size book, it is smaller therefore the pictures are smaller. You would only be able to use a medium with a smaller tip, and if your eyes are bad such as mine, it may hurt your eyes. I did try to color one pic and it took me a very long time because I had to keep stopping to let my eyes re-adjust. If you don't mind small pics and tiny details it's a great book.

This is a beautiful book. It is good paper, single sided images and clear concise drawings. They are wonderful to color.

This book would have been 5 stars, had it not been CreateSpace! I must have mixed up the Christmas books I was looking at because I wouldn't have bought it had I seen CreateSpace. The images are really cute, and some are unique.. which is what I liked about the book. The paper is below my standards. Sad. Wish that CreateSpace would give BETTER paper quality. But with that said, the pictures are nice, and the book is a nice size, images are nice...

I got this book after watching his series on BBC America. His trip traces the same route the Crusaders took during the Fourth Crusade, but he never says it. I wish he had gone to Zada then the trip would have been complete. It is very interesting to read the recipes. The directions are clear and easy to understand the color pictures are helpful to determine if you got it right. He chose recipes based on places that are not very touristy but are very traditional.

This is a wonderful book full of excellent recipes from the eastern mediterranean. If you enjoy food, travelling and cooking, this is a treasure. Rick Stein writes easy to understand recipes and his books are colorful and beautiful. You can find here the most famous dishes from Eastern mediterranean cuisine and some unknown dishes that are wonderful. The book is a great guide for eating in Venice, Croatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey.

Fabulous book . I have 3 other recipe books of his. I love his style and have made some super meals from it. I like cooking different cuisines and trying new ideas. Highly recommend this book.
