Anglican Journal"This insightful book is leavened with charm and wit."Augsburg Fortress Book News"Especially valuable for preachers, seminary students, and AIMs. Plantinga provides a sophisticated analysis of sin . . . Pastors and counselors will find this book especially valuable."Interpretation"Plantinga's new book is as fine an instrument as a mere book can be for reintroducing Christendom to the concept of sin. It is conceptually sophisticated without being technical or academic. . . A stunning feast of metaphors and memorable formulas, of illustrations from private and public life gleaned from history, biographies, fiction, newspapers and magazines, and personal experience -- as well as an occasional theologian. This is theology for preachers and others who live and work close to the ground."Journal of Theology for Southern Africa"A fascinating and very readable theology of sin."Librarian's World (Evangelical Church Library Association)"Highly recommended reading and a must for church libraries."Princeton Seminary Bulletin"A coherent, substantive theological treatise with a wealth of homiletical insights and real-life connections."Provident Book Finder"An excellent book . . . I had to read this book for a Systematic Theology course, and I can say with all honesty that it is one of the best books I have ever read. Plantinga pulls no punches in this book; at the end of the book one will surely have a robust, orthodox view of sin. Plantinga's greatest strengths in the book are his innate ability to boil down a given topic to the bare essentials and present them in such a way that the most unengaged layman can still understand the presented concepts well, and also his numerous illustrations - he uses these to clarify and demonstrate concepts, and he is essentially an expert at such things as seen in this fine book. Even though the topic is a heavy one, Plantinga does not cause a feeling of overbearingness on the reader; rather, the reader is presented with a full understanding of the true nature of sin. Christians need this book, especially in a time such as now when sin has been diminished to almost a concept of silliness. The fact of the matter is, sin is real and it affects humanity on not just a personal level, as Plntinga demonstrates throughout the book. Sin is a social problem as well, and the Christian would do well to take this into account when thinking about topics of this nature. Overall, an enlightening and enjoyable read, if I may dare call it such considering the subject matter.

At a time when Christians are more aware of grace than ever (which is good) this book keeps us balanced. The topic of sin sounds dry and boring. This book is neither dry or boring. Better words are “enlightening,” “convicting” and “stimulating”}

Much of the criticism surrounding this book by Cornelius Platinga Jr. has to do with the lack of application. This criticism is unwarranted because much of what this book offers is a deeper understanding of what sin is both individually and globally. This spawns various applications by allowing readers to confront sin in more knowledgeable ways. By its very definition, sin, and the enemy, constantly seek to deceive. This book allows readers to know their enemy better in order to effectively engage in the spiritual battle they are called to fight.The author begins by defining "shalom" or God's original design for creation. He says, "In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness, and delight--a rich state of affairs in which natural needs are satisfied and natural gifts fruitfully employed, a state of affairs that inspires joyful wonder as its Creator and Savior opens doors and welcomes the creatures in whom he delights. Shalom, in other words, is the way things ought to be" (10). This is the foundation of which sin radically opposes in a variety of ways. Platinga explores those ways with great insight and explanation. If you are a reader who needs to come to a greater understanding of how your enemy works, then this book will benefit you deeply.

I love this book! It gave me many things to think about in terms of sin and its affects on mankind. I walked away understanding that self-sufficiency is sin...that self-sufficiency is my bent. The Lord used the thoughts in this book to help me understand the importance of depending on Him and how true peace is found in dependence on God. Grateful for works like this that hold biblical truths.

I came across this title while reading Volf's "Exclusion and Embrace" several years ago and had picked it up for some research on the distinction that Volf noted (light from dark, etc.). While that was a very small portion of the book, the rest of the book was also truly a pleasure to read. To read a book on sin and call it a pleasure shows that the author is not only a great academic, but a truly gifted writer. Plantinga delivers a thorough look at sin (it's progression, it's parasitic nature , it's excuses, and it's tragedy) in a brutally honest, yet grace filled way. Particularly compelling is the overarching theme of sin as the "blamable vandalism of shalom." I highly recommend this book not only for particular research but also for general pastoral insight and ministry.

I am glad I bought this wise and approachable text on the many facets of sin from a Calvinist perspective. The illustrations were helpful and rich food for thought. I learned about the extent and far-reaching consequences of sin in this book than in my time as a seminary student. I liked it so much I read it twice to absorb more.

This is a wonderful read in its depth and breadth of treatment on the topic how we understand SIN, its forms, its consequences, and its role as contaminant, contagion, perversion, disruptor, foolishness, and futility in our lives. Plantinga argues persuasively that sin is a choice and that we should NOT make that choice. Further, we ARE culpable for our choices. That said, he also posits a way of recovery, reconciliation, and redemption. This book will send you to the Scriptures, to other Christian writers, and ultimately to your knees in prayer and confession.This is a book to be read, reflected upon, and re-read. It gets deeper with each reading. It is checked full of affirmations, inspiration, and motivation. Cornelius Plantinga makes me want to be a better Christian.

Every word, sentence, paragraph, and page is an expression of heavenly wisdom that all came together to form a perfect union! Wow, wow, wow! It's an amazing book!!!
