The characters are blessedly few (about 7), well developed, and are particularly compelling--even the criminal Secret Service agents, and the unprincipled presidential Chief of Staff. Sadly, in this 1996 novel, the POTUS is a unredeemable scuzball, as we have come to expect of our most popular Chief Executives. Some plot elements are implausible, but "suspending disbelief" is worth the effort.ADVICEBuy the hardcover edition. My only complaint is that "Absolute Power" is a stand-alone novel, not a series. Nearly fifteen years later, I'm still eager for more of Luther (even if that requires prequels), Jack, and Kate.
This is the best Baldacci I have read so far. A burglary, rough sex, a killing and the President of the United States set the stage and away we go. The burglar witnesses an unbelievable event, setting in motion an increasingly complex web of intrigue and murder. The story picks up speed and intensity as you read on until finally you just can't put it down.I highly recommend "Absolute Power" to any fan of mystery novels and, certainly, to any Baldacci follower.
So I'd heard a lot about Absolute Power. I expected it to be one of the best books I ever read, and I was not disappointed.When a professional burglar witnesses a murder involving the President of the United States it starts a chain of evens no one could have imagined.In the beginning I wasn't completely sold on the book. There were a lot of threads and carracters, and it didn't seem that the book had a connection or a direction. But as the book progressed, as the story progressed, it developed into something I could have never guessed. The threads wove together into something amazing. It was a book that made me cry and kept me guessing the whole time. I read a lot of suspense and it takes a lot to catch me off guard. Absolute Power did just that. I didn't expect how the story unfolded, I didn't expect how characters reacted, and I absolutely did not see how it was going to end.I highly recommend this book to fans of political thrillers.
I read because the movie based on the book is one of my favorites. Usually the book, for me, tells a better story. I have to admit that while movies generally cut a lot of corners along with a lot of characters, it seems that the movie really captured the plot. Even the combining of characters was well done and the casting was excellent. The book tells a far more detailed and perhaps overly wordy story with a much different outcome. If you love the movie you will like the book.
Baldacci does a good job of painting himself into a corner, while coming up with a convincing conclusion. The excessive profanity was distracting, however. Other books that I've read by him are better written.
Great book as always. I have read most of David Baldacci's books and have never been disappointed, however, this book was almost five hundred pages long and only twenty nine chapters. Chapter's should never be over an hour of reading. So, the only thing I didn't like about the book was how long the chapters were.
Baldacci write the best stories. I can't put his books down. So far I have read his memory man series, reading will Robbie series,read the camel club series,and A shaw series, working on king and maxwell series. Just keep writing these "can't put down" books! Thanks for super stories
Baldacci has always been a favorite of mine. He knows how to keep you in suspense to the end. The characters were defined very well, especially the President and Chief of Staff. The story always had you guessing whether they would be caught for the murders. I have not read one of his books that I have had to guess at. He has a good story line and always makes the characters colorful. I have read at least 4 of this author and will read many more.
This is a very enjoyable, exciting read. I loved Luther, even though he is a career criminal-kept wishing for things to work out for him. Jack is the kind of person everyone wishes for as a friend. The nightmare they find themselves in is unbelievable- thankfully this is fiction. Very thrilling, edge of your seat story.
